Serralunga d’Alba

Most of our vineyards are located in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba. It is part of the area known as Bassa Langa and derives its name from its particular conformation: a long ridge that winds for kilometers between ups and downs and changes in orientation. A “langa,” in fact: a tongue of land raised by tectonic movements linked to the birth of the Apennine chain that two million years ago lifted and tilted ancient stratified sediments toward the northwest.

The territory of Serralunga, just like all the reliefs of the Langhe, is the visible result of a continuous and prolonged dynamic interaction between surface modeling phenomena on the one hand and geodynamic activity on the other. Between the earth moving and the elements shaping it, over an eons-long period.

Soil

A legacy of these events is the particular type of soil, which characterizes almost the entire municipality of Serralunga: the Lequio formation, a type of soil that experts associate with the production of robust and long-lived wines.

The soils of Serralunga d’Alba, characterized by Lequio Formations with layers of gray marls alternating with sandstones formed by more or less cemented siliceous sands; the presence of calcium carbonate and iron gives the soils reddish-gray hues.

Barolo DOCG

The exceptional nature of this combination of soil and land morphology, as well as their homogeneity throughout the municipality, means that Serralunga has a special privilege. With Barolo and Castiglione Falletto, in fact, it forms the trio of municipalities whose soils are entirely part of the Barolo DOCG production area.

Not only that, each portion of the territory is identified with a particular geographical mention. To each mention corresponds a precise soil composition, a slope, an orientation. A vineyard, we might say; a cru, if you will.

Today there are 39 mentions in Serralunga: it is the municipality with the most. Some of our vineyards are located within two of these: Sorano and San Rocco.

Contrada of Sorano

Our brand is the name of the place where we live and where we have almost all the vineyards.

Although it is part of the municipality of Serralunga, the small hamlet of Sorano is much further north than the old town with the castle: almost 3 kilometers divide us, a walk of about 40 minutes. From our courtyard, around which the house, workshop and cellar gravitate, we reach our vineyards in a quarter-hour walk, or a little more. Only the vineyard in Sinio requires us to walk a little further.

Elevations are distributed in steep slopes and abrupt changes of slope, starting from summits around 320 m above sea level to 250 m above sea level near the valley floor.

Diano d’Alba

Administrative boundaries tell us that one of our lands, where we grow nebbiolo vines for Barolo and Langhe nebbiolo, is in the municipality of Diano d’Alba. It is located in the Gallaretto mention, which together with Sorano and La Vigna represents the heritage of Barolo DOCG mentions attributed to Diano.

A closer look at the map reveals that administrative boundaries, here, do not tell the morphological reality of the territory. The border between the two municipalities, in fact, runs in this northern portion on the ridge of the Serralunga Langa: the village of Diano stands in the background, on the opposite slope, across the valley floor.

The responsibilities of administration are divided where, on the contrary, soil, relief, and climate mark continuity and ignore boundaries drawn by humans.
